I was in the navy (Malay Section of the British Royal Navy). We sailed in HMS Scorpion (ABDUL RAHMAN B.Y. A.B. MN 713 (Malay Section) SCORPION) and sailed the South China Sea to the Borneo and surrounding areas. I was handling the telegraph machine, that was my job. It was the during the World War II. (The Japanese started to raid South East Asia December 1941 thru Songkla and Patani Siam, then Thailand, followed by Malaya thru Kota Bharu. From January to February 1942, heavy war between the Japanese and British over Singapore resulting in the British surrender.)
Then our ship was bombed by the Japanese. That caused a large hole on the ship and ship began to capsize. I was with two other ship personnel - Chinese. They were cooks. We jumped ship, and swam. (13/02/42 M.P.K. SHIP LOSS)
Then we made it into a sampan and got away. We made it to Padang of Sumatera. Then the Japanese found us and we were captured. (True account of HMS Scorpion is that it was attacked by Japanese fighter plane and later sunk by Japanese war ship February 12 1942, a few months after Pearl Harbour, when Japanese made mass attacks on British ships and conquered Asia. This was near the Banka Island near Singapore. Five ship crew survived the hit. Five hours left at sea in the dark the ship Mata Hari saw them and rescued them. Mata Hari anchored at Palembang. They were found by the Japanese and had to surrender. The ship was forced to sail back to Banka Island where most of the people on the ship became Japanese prisoners .)
We were send to Singapore then to Indochina, Vietnam. We were put in a Japanese captain's house. We only followed instruction.
Then directions came for us to be moved to Singapore. We were jailed at Changi jail for two weeks.
We were then released and I was sent to Batu Gajah. We traveled by military truck (possibly after September 1945, after the Japanese surrendered Singapore to the British. He must have served the RMN for at least four years 1941 till 1945.)
There I was directed to the Agricultural Department. Because I was in the military and very disciplined I was appointed Agricultural Officer looking over padi plantings.
There my father married Tun (my mother was Mariah.)
As a step mother, she, Tun, was cruel. We couldn't stand her (my wife was carrying a baby and all) so we moved to Batu Gajah. We stayed with our uncle Sulaiman. It was a small house, a government quarters. I was still with the Agricultural Department.
Then I had Tibi. I was hospitalized at Batu Gajah hospital the only medical facility for Tibi in the whole of Malaysia. I was treated by Dr Phang. I was held there for two years.
Then there was this new Tibi facility in Kuala Lumpur. I was moved there and spent another two years in that hospital. (All in all he spent four years of his life in hospital for Tibi.)
We lived at Jalan Pasar.
(We later lived at Jalan Ipoh, when he was posted at the Depot Pusat Bekalan Tentera. He retired from being a government servant. We moved to Taman Perwira, the house he had lived till today. He continued to work with RRI and later Hong Leong Bank. He resigned at 60.)
(Last June, at 90, he was diagnosed with cancer. He underwent a major surgery to remove the effected area. He recovered extremely well from the major surgery done at the KL General Hospital.)
(28th July, his second daughter, Zunaida, left him after battling Leukemia. It was after lunch 30th July he told us his life story when my son Hazem, his grandson, asked him about his life in the navy.)

~ama.
Amar, plus, the things that he had gone thru his life ... serving the army during war, menunggu utk diselamatkan at sea, at night for hours (if he is one of the five rescued from HMS Scorpion as accounted..), being prisoner of war (POW), then hospitalized for 4yrs for Tibi.. incredible. Talk about his spirit for living.. As Acu had told Acik Aa, kita kena ponder and follow his practises to stay as long as he had... he is one for vitamins... So kena makan vitamin.
If you have other info to add on Atuk's past life pls comment further.
atok u rock!
Mohd you got it. One "rock of gibraltar" he is bringing up nine children (three had deceased). His wife went to rahmatullah leaving him about 10 years ago. It's pretty obvious that he misses her...
Hehehe.. ada jgak bapak citer atuk dulu penah ala-ala titanic ni.. If I'm not mistaken, atuk boleh cakap Jepun (ke bleh faham Jepun) Sekarang ni dah lupa la.. Bapak told us before that he had younger brother named Azhar but died because of demam campak. Hopefully this is a correct info :)
Fidah yes he had a brother in fact a twin brother. Gambar dia ngan twin dia and their father rasenye ada kat Gombak. Nantilah Acu one day akan scan those old photoes and publish nicely.
I'm not sure about his twin brother's name being Azhar. But Azhar was his nineth child (Acu being the 8th, your dad being the 3rd) who died at age 1 or 2 yrs old following high fever. Innalillah wainna ilaihi rajiun.
Yes, atuk did told me about how he survived from the sinking ship. He and friends has to row as fast as they could, away from the sinking ship to avoid from being pull by the strong current when the ship sink.
He taught me this song he learn during the Japanese period, sound like "Chin chin nosyi, wa syuro sutho (Japanese), kencing dalam topi berak dalam seluor".
I don't remember living at Jalan Pasar. I think he live there alone or with frineds. We (opah, myself, Rashid and late sister Zunaida - Al-Fatihah)were temporary staying with my Opah Som at Rumah Merah, Bukit Chandan, Kuala Kangsar, Perak. Later, that was December 1953, he managed to rent a house at Jalan Ipoh [the house that Wan Ni has been staying till April, 2008 (not so sure of the month)], he brought us to KL, Selangor, now KL, Wilayah Persekutuan.
Atuk has a twin brother by the name of Zulkurnain, who passed away at the age of 18 yrs. Jo, was name after him.
Wan Nyah
wow what a nice story. and he can still remember! he must have gone through a lot in his life. respek la atuk!
ha.ha. cute song Nyah. Wonder if i should teach it to my kids, if they're not already reading this :)
(Still remember the song mak used to sang us: Cak cekur udang gamik ...)
Hmm, must put up a choronology of his life events ... He must have been 23 when he joined the navy. When did he first got TB? When did he married emak/opah? Sesiapa boleh congak campur tolak the years of events? The family must have stayed at Jln Ipoh for more than 10 yrs. I was maybe 4 or 5 when we moved to Tmn Perwira.
Hi Hana, i've read your blog...
Correction:
(He continued to work with RRI and later Hong Leong Bank. He resigned at 60.)
After penchant he work with LEMBAGA PASARAN DAN PELESEN GETAH MALAYSIA at Mercantile Building which was the old Hongkong Bank and shift to Hong Leong Building till he resigned.
To all his and our late mom children. Remember the days they have to under go and sacrifice to raised us night and days. Just being concerned enought to make him feel happy while he is still around. Long live apak.

Hi and tks Joe for the correction.
Still remember when filling in those buku bantuan forms for school (hate filling in those forms and still do) he would have "retired government servant" for his occupation. Such dedication.
